Saturday, 6 February 2010

Been a busy start to 2010. Organising the concert for Haiti at the Phoenix Theatre on the 21st January which raised well over four thousand pounds. The concert featured many of the nominees for the BBC Folk Awards. Show of Hands, Jim Causley and Jackie Oates appeared.
The new double album "Archives " is released. There are 14 tracks of www.tuneflow.com competition songs on the first CD. The second CD is an edited live recording of the 2009 concert at the Barnfield Theatre Exeter. An abbreviated version listed as "From the Archives" is available at all internet stores.
There are big changes at the Riverside Studio in Exeter with a complete re-fit and a new music content website under construction. Over the past five years many fine recordings have been made in the studio by established artists.
The highlights of last year for Mick was the two semi-final placings in the big UK Songwriting competition which received over six thousand entries. The two songs were "Brenda Jean" and "One minute to Midnight" A live BBC Radio Devon performance with Phil Beer of those two songs went very well. A packed Barnfield Theatre concert early in the year featured Mick with the hastily convened "The Chords" which included, Jim Howden, Phil Beer, Kat Jenkins, Damien Scarr, Alan Howlett, Ian Cowe and Dave Eustace.
2010 promises to be another busy year with local appearances planned, recording local artists and another album of new songs.

The Rock Island skifflers circa 1958

Mick is the one with the stripe jumper that mum knitted. The band was formed during national service in Celle Germany with the Devonshire Regiment. Oddly the usual dress code for the group was regimental blues which hardly went well with the music but kept the army happy. Where are they now ? Mick was chuffed to recently hear from "The lad" on the left Neil Peterkin. The bass player was called Frank Burton. Please don't hesitate to contact Mick if you have a connection to this motley crew!

Skiffle - a style of popular music in the 1950s; based on American folk music and played on guitars and improvised percussion instruments.
